The Old Granary

Description

This property sleeps 2 including infants. Lower Collaton is an old traditional farmhouse dating back to the Domesday Book and before. We have retired from serious farming, but in the fields in the quiet south facing valley are our four remaining prize winning pedigree Shetland sheep, and chicken, ducks, and cat can be found in the yard. Tucked into the corner of the grassy courtyard is The Old Granary, which has been inspected and graded 4* by the A.A. This perfectly delightful tiny cottage is a treat for two (no more than two!), either a bolt hole for Mum and Dad, a base for keen walkers and bird watchers, or indeed a cosy nest for the romantically inclined! The cottage is attached to an old barn on one side, and provides upside-down accommodation with the living room upstairs. The flooring is antique maple with rugs, under-floor central heating, and is stylishly furnished and decorated in rustic natural colours. To the left of the front door is a grassy patio area with wooden table and chairs, surrounded by a trellis and bed of pretty flowering shrubs and roses. As you enter The Old Granary you come into the bedroom, with the comfy double bed directly ahead covered with pillows of gold, green and rustic red. To the right the tiled wet room has a beautiful marble and mosaic border. Tucked under the stairs is a wall-hung toilet, and in the corner a contemporary basin on a marble stand. The curved wall creates ample space for the shower. Up the winding handcrafted staircase is a well equipped kitchen with oven, gas hob and grill, washer/drier and fridge, and an intimate dining area. In the far corner is a cosy sofa for two, with T.V. and DVD. From the window there are lovely views of our fields, our pedigree Shetland sheep and the peaceful valley of the River Gara. For evening eating there is a fine selection of local pubs, all with a well earned reputation for good cooking, and James and Rosie would be happy to advise you. We regret that dogs are not allowed in The Old Granary. Our own website www.lower-collaton-farm.co.uk has lots of detail of the cottage, the farm and the area plus availability and online booking facility.

Location

Use the map below to view the location of this property and its surrounding area. Controls are provided to allow for zooming in and out, scrolling around, and setting the map to satellite or terrain views.

(N.B. Depending on the details provided by the manager/owner of this property the map may either show the exact location of the property, or simply the location of the village or town in which it is situated.)

Historically a major naval port, particularly in Tudor times, the town of Dartmouth sits on the east side of the Dart estuary, opposite Kingswear, in the South Hams district of Devon. With a backdrop of rolling hills and beautiful view of the river upstream Dartmouth is set within a landscape which has justly been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The town itself is full of interest with narrow lanes and many historic listed buildings and shops of Elizabethan and medieval character. The famous Butterwalk, which is now the location for Dartmouth Museum, has a line of granite columns supporting the carved wooden fascias of the buildings above. Sadly, the town was struck by a fire in 2010 which damaged a number of listed buildings in Fairfax Place and Higher Street.

Dartmouth’s naval origins are evident to this day in the college which sits above the outskirts of the town at which all of the Royal Navy’s officers are trained. The town has proved popular with some famous residents over the years including Agatha Christie who had a house along the river bank (which any good river cruise will surely point out!) and Flora Thompson, the author of Lark Rise to Candleford.

Transport is well catered for, with bus and road access, as well as a heritage steam railway which brings in many vistors from Paington to the estuary station across the river at Kingswear. Several regular ferrys operate across the river to transport visitors to and from Dartmouth itself. With a good range of restaurants and holiday accommodation, including many cottages searchable on Go2, Dartmouth has a lot to offer and is an essential visit on any south Devon holiday.
